| HOBBY HILL December 8th | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The fly-in at Hobby Hill on Saturday, December 8th, was a superb event. We didn't get an actual count, but estimators say at least 60 planes flew in, with around 150 EAA members attending. Good friends. Good food. Our thanks go to Herb Clark for a wonderful day! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| SPECIAL EVENT COMES TO LOVE'S LANDING | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You all remember the night of November 17th - that special night where the Leoned Meteor Showers were to be the most spectacular in thirty-five years. Well to a privileged few they were most spectacular and special. The Rules and their guests viewed something no one else in the world saw that night. I'm speaking of the Rule clan, you know, Clint and Mary and their beloved daughter, Patty, whom, I need to mention, is in awe of shooting stars. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It seems that a party was being held around Clint and Mary's pool at 4:00 in the morning to witness this event. For star gazers it was the event of the century. There, everyone, was Clint, Mary, Patty, their nephew and his wife, the Mosley's, Chuck and Maryanne, all flat on their backs in utter amazement with the show that Mother Nature was putting on. When all of a sudden the mother of all meteors came across the roof of the hanger out into the early morning sky heading in a southeasterly direction. It was the brightest, longest the most spectacular sighting of the evening. Patty screamed with amazement and announced it even was making noise. Everyone heard it, incredible! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It's hard to believe that no one else in the surrounding area saw that great sight. Must have been a special event for a special group of people!......DK | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| EAA 1236 - HOMEBUILT PROJECTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Doug Craig is building an RV6A project. Engine is an 0320 Lycoming. This is a quick-build kit purchased 3 1/2 years ago. The project was put on hold when Doug started building his home in Love's Landing. Now that the home is complete, he"s back working on the RV6A. The instrument panel is near completion, engine is mounted, propeller is in place and now the wings need to be installed. Completion date -- not soon enough! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dick Krause is building a Pitts Model 12 with a Vedeneyev M-14 P Engine (made in Moscow} "It makes lots of noise and smoke -- So get ready!!!!!" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Leonard Elmendorf is building a highly-modified home-made Skylane. "Is just about ready to hang the wings and will fly in the Spring!" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Bill McAuliffe -- Glastar N789BM " After 1700+ hrs. the project was ready for painting, instrumentation and firewall forward. At that point I stopped recording times as the paint preparation seemed to take forever. That's all behind me now. Items remaining are plumbing, prop and spinner, electrical checkout and finally the windshield. Interior upholstery and accent colors will wait until flyoff is done. That should commence early next year. (Didn't I say that last year, also?)" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Mike Milecef "The restoration of our Fairchild UC61A began in 1990. UC61A is a military version of the Fairchild F24W41. ;It was made in 1941 for the U.S. Army and was finished in olive drab camouflage color scheme. Mabel talked me out of restoring that color scheme so our Fairchild is going to be done in U.S. Navy colors with 1943 insignia. For those of you who don't remember what a Fairchild F24 looks like, Charlie Bell owns a beautifully restored one, finished in yellow and green. The engine of our UC61A is a radial 165 HP Warner, which is ready to be bolted on. The propeller will initially be a wooden Sensenich, but an Aeromatic will also be available. The project is fairly close to completion. The fuselage is 100% complete including the paint job. I obtained a waiver from Transport Canada for the requirement for prominent display of the of registration marks so they will be only 3" and hidden underneath the horizontal stabilizer. The serial number will be prominently displayed on the vertical stabilizer and that will be my call sign - Fairchild 649. When you hear those words on your radio here at Love's Landing, you will know the project is complete and a 1000 mile cross country flight accomplished. Don't ask me when this will happen - that would be like asking the U.S. military when bin Laden will be caught. Last summer and the summer before, I rebuilt both wings from just the spars and the hardware from the original wings. All ribs and leading edge are new.The plan for next summer is to cover and paint the wings and install them along with the engine. From there it is just final touches. I will keep you posted on the significant developments." |
