EAA 1236 May Newsletter ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ PRESIDENT’S FORUM Greetings fellow members. Having just completed our Chapter’s monthly meeting on May 11th, it is time once again for our monthly newsletter. We had a great turnout for our meeting - 10 aircraft fly - ins, and 42 members in attendance. I would first like to thank Ray and Judy Brown for their gracious hospitality in allowing us the use of their hangar for our meeting. Next, it makes me happy to welcome our five new members. I know you all join me in welcoming Randy and Jennifer Ott ---- Loves Landing Tom and Gloria Smith ---- Leesburg Jackie Johnson ---- Lady Lake We all look forward to their fellowship, and contributions to our chapters activities. Speaking of activities , we now have an activities committee They are : Hugh and Ida Johnson Ollie and Lorene Washburn Darrel and Marilyn Bennett I know that each of them have a lot of great ideas, and a lot of enthusiasm. They will make recommendations to the board, and plan our future events once they have been presented to our membership, and approved . I appreciate their volunteerism, and look forward to their input with regard to our future activities. We also have a membership committee. They are : myself President Ray Brown Vice - president Julie Dane Sec / Tres. Jane Craig Newsletter Editor Dick McLean Membership Coordinator Clint Rule Membership Rep. This committee held its first meeting on 29 April 02 at Ray and Judy Brown’s house. We met in order to review results of our membership surveys which our membership coordinator distributed to our membership. We had approx 50 % membership response, a lot of good ideas, a lot of good suggestions. Dick McLean provided a debrief of our meeting and survey results to all members present at our May 11 th. meeting. You will see a lot of things happening as a result of your input. The activities committee, is just one result. If you did not respond to the membership survey, blow the dust off of it, fill it out, and return it to Dick. We need your input, this is your chapter. Contact Ray Brown for tickets for EAA Sweepstakes 2002. My thanks to Ollie and Lorene Washburn for allowing our chapter to store all of our tables, chairs and other support equipment in one of their garage bays. My thanks to Clint Rule for his debrief on his final disposition from the FAA w.r.t. his Camp David airspace overflight. My thanks to Al Nase for his advise to our membership who may use auto fuel in their aircraft. See him for details. That is all for now. Jackie Johnson (New EAA 1236 member) 750-3424 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THE CITY OF ST. PETERSBURG MUST KEEP ALBERT WHITTED AIRPORT OPEN. Albert Whitted Airport (SPG) is located on prime waterfront real estate that the city wants to redevelop into a park and mixed housing area. The city thought that by repaying FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant money it would be able to close the airport. The FAA has determined that the city can't do it. Hopefully this trend will continue. HELP SAVE OTHER AIRPORTS Air Support Volunteers monitor the threat of closing down airports. Evidently there is a threat to four airports in FL – AAF (Apalachicola), AVO (Avon Park), X06 (Arcadia) and X07 (Lake Wales).
