| PRESIDENT’S FORUM Having just recently returned from a week at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, it is good to be home again. A few of us were there dis-assembling an F-4B Phantom II and prepping it for transport to an American Legion Post in Hinsdale, N.Y. As it is time once again for our monthly Newsletter, I will start by telling you that we have just completed our October 02 monthly Chapter Meeting. I would like to thank Ollie and Lorene Washburn for allowing us to utilize their hangar, and I would like to thank Darryl and Marilyn Bennett for their outstanding job of hosting our meeting. We had 27 of our members present, and five fly-in aircraft. All in all a pretty good turnout for our meeting We were able to have our new ball caps at this month’s meeting. If you are a new member within the last year, you are entitled to one of these ball caps as part of your membership in our Chapter . We will have them at our November meeting as well . They will also be for sale to any one who would like to have one for $ 10.00 each. I think that they are very nice, and that every one of our members should have one. See Ray Brown in order to purchase yours at our next meeting. A major event is coming up in December, election of new Chapter Officers. We will accept nominations during our November meeting , and hold Chapter elections during our December meeting. This is important, think about it , and plan on attending the November and December meetings. We need to have a major number of our membership present in order to do these elections right. Congratulations to Doug and Jane Craig for the first flight of their new aircraft. Nice work by Leonard Elmendorf for his final completion and initial test flight of this project. Congratulations also to Paul Wilson and Dennis Angelo on the successful completion of their 17-day VFR tour of the lower 48 states. A lot of planning went into the trip and I know that a lot of satisfaction came out of it. Nice work gents . That is all for now. See you all at our Next Meeting: Date: 9 November 2002 Time: 10:00 a.m. Place: Paul and Lois Wilson’s hangar at Woods and Lakes (Near the windsock) Best personal regards, Fly safely, Chuck Mosely (Chuckmo) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |

| BIRD STRIKES Since 80 percent of all bird strikes occur within the airport environment and below 1500 feet AGL, the time to be most vigilant is during your take offs and landings. Also you should carry a heightened awareness of bird migrations in the spring and fall. Always alert other aircraft of bird activity. Avoid flying along rivers or shorelines, especially at low altitude. Birds as well as pilots use these navigational features. If you see birds ahead of you attempt to pass above them as birds usually breakaway downward when threatened. If dense bird concentrations are expected, avoid high-speed descent and approach. Halving the speed results in a quarter of the impact energy. Heated windshields are more pliable and better able to withstand bird impact. If the windshield is broken or cracked, slow the aircraft to reduce wind blast and follow approved procedures. Remember to fly the aircraft – don’t allow yourself to be distracted by the blood, feathers, smell and windblast! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
