PRESIDENT'S FORUM
Having just completed our February 2003 meeting, it is once again time for our newsletter.
I would like first to thank
Ollie and Lorene Washburn, for their outstanding hospitality in hosting our meeting.
   We had as guests,
Richard and Kathy Krause, and Larry and Mary Ann Michaels. It was great to have them join us .
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome our latest new member,
Mr. Dave Gray.  It is a pleasure to welcome him to our organization .
Our Chapter continues to expand and improve with each new member.
I would also like to welcome
Zack and Kyle Krietenstein as our newest Young Eagles.  They both were able to fly with Curtis McClung in a Cessna 150 on the 25th of January 2003.  Congratulations to them both.
If you have any questions about our
Young Eagles Program, contact Judy Betz, our Chapter's new Young Eagles coordinator.
I would also like to thank
Leonard Elmendorf for his brief on his Skylane project, and Jack Barker for his brief on his Hatz bi-plane project.  There are other ongoing projects out there that our members are working on. You need to give Jane Craig an update on these projects so they can be included into our newsletter.
I will be attending the meeting of the
Hangar Flyers this coming Saturday.  As you know they will be our invited guests for our April meeting.  Lunch following this meeting, bring a covered dish.  Make sure to include this on your planning calendar of events.
That is all for now, see you at
our next meeting:
        Date: March 8th       Time: 10:00 a.m.
        Place: Herb Clark's hangar, HobbyHill

    Fly safely,

GA PILOTS WERE AMONG 'COLUMBIA' CREW
General aviation pilots were among the seven-person crew who died on the space shuttle "Columbia".  Mission Specialist David Brown, 46, owned a Beechcraft Bonanza and had logged more than 2,700 flight hours, with 1,700 in high-performance military aircraft. He was a Navy captain and flight surgeon. Mission Specialist Laurel Clark, 41, was a Navy commander and a flight surgeon. Brown and Clark were making their first space flights. Another active GA pilot, Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla, 41, was an aerospace engineer and a certificated flight instructor with airplane, glider, multiengine, and seaplane ratings. She enjoyed doing aerobatics and flying tailwheel airplanes. STS-107 was her second space flight

EAA-MICROSOFT WRIGHT SIMULATOR MAKES FIRST 'FLIGHT'
Visitors at six tour stops this year will have the chance to make their own personal “first flights” at EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk touring pavilion, presented by Ford Motor Company. A 1903 Wright Flyer flight simulator built by EAA’s Restoration Center staff and running Microsoft’s popular flight simulator software, will be an integral part of the 24,000-square foot touring pavilion.  The controls, configured just like Orville and Wilbur’s original, allow participants to try their hand—and other body parts—at the first flight. The simulator replicates the “cockpit” harness of the 1903 Flyer. To operate it, a person needs to lie face down in the cradle and manipulate the wing-warping and rudder controls with his or her hips, holding the throttle handle with the right hand
and the elevator with the left. The goal is to allow people an opportunity
to experience at least some of what the Wright brothers did first hand.
Hope to have the six tour stops listed in the March Newsletter.
NO GA USER FEES IN BUSH BUDGET PLAN for October 1, 2003 – September 30, 2004.  For the first time in six years, the administration’s proposed budget plan does not include any attempts to impose user fees on general aviation or privatize air traffic control.. Key items that are slated for funding increases include an improved computer system for flight service briefers and more accurate GPS signaling.  Now Congress will have its say.
The country’s oldest pilot, Ralph Charles, EAA 90150067,
passed away recently at the age of 103. Ralph’s life spanned three different centuries and all of powered flight’s history. He was born four years before the Wright brothers’ epic flight at Kitty Hawk—and by age 19 was working as a welder with Orville and Wilbur Wright at Dayton Wright Field. In the late 1920s, he owned Wheeler’s Field in Zanesville, Ohio, and built seven airplanes. During the 1930s, Ralph worked for several airlines, including TWA and Atlantic Caribbean, flying Stinsons and Ford Tri-Motors. During World War II  Ralph was a test pilot for Curtiss-Wright. In 1964, he moved to Perry County, Ohio, and built an airstrip where he and his late wife of  70 years, Leona, hosted many fly-ins.  He was still flying his airplane, an Aeronca Defender Blue Boy II,  at age 102
