"2003 PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR"
EAA 1236 Member Miguel Cubano was recently recognized as Puerto Rico’s 2003 “Physician of the Year”.  He is the youngest surgeon ever to receive this honor in the 100-year history of the Puerto Rico Medical Association..  Miguel serves as General Surgery Department Head and Director, Gastric Bypass Program at Naval Hospital Jacksonville.  He was selected for all his achievements during the past year, which include his recent war service in Iraq, his selection as the U. S. Navy astronaut candidate for N.A.S.A., the Knights of Malta Award and his leadership in several community programs in Jacksonville.  He received a Combat Action Ribbon while in Iraq, and N.A.S.A.will be intervewing Miguel for the Mission Specialist position later this year.  (Originally N.A.S.A. had 4,000 candidates which has been narrowed to 120. Miguel has a good chance of making the final 20.)

From Jack Turner and Bill Lamb:

While in Wisconsin this summer we had some Alaskan pilots visit our EAA chapter meeting.  They mentioned the below technique of landing on short beaches, using hydroplaning as an aid.  They lock their brakes before touching down on the water.  On takeoff, they hit the brakes just as they leave the beach, entering the water.  Needless to say, they had better have their timing just right.

It's a procedure called water assisted landing/take off. It is common among the bush pilots/planes in Alaska where there many lakes and rivers with sand bars that are not quite long enough to land or take off from with out doing this. He can actually withstand some reasonable longitudinal inputs as the aircraft is hydroplaning and the water will support a significant load as long as he is going at least 35-40kts.  It is not what you would call a FAA recommended procedure.

“ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO I WAS FLYING ONE SUNDAY MORNING AND WATCHED A PLANE DO THE SAME THING IN LAKE WEIR.  HE PUT HIS WHEELS ON THE WATER HEADED SOUTH FOR A MILE OR SO AND THEN PULLED UP---TURNED 180 DEGREES AND DID THE SAME THING GOING NORTH. THE WATER WAS LIKE GLASS. I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT. “ Jack

From Donna Bell:

“This was the airplane that got the viewers choice award at our wonderful Fly-in at Brodhead which was held on Sept.5-6-7, 2003.  The younger kids go around and collect funds to do this award decoration.  They know they cannot climb on or touch the airplanes, so they throw the roll of toilet paper from one side to another.  Can't possibly figure how many rolls they went through.  It is always done late on Saturday night.  Next day they are expected to come back and help clean it off and pick up debris.   Can hardly tell it is a Beech D-18.”
