| PRESIDENT’S RAMBLINGS
I want to thank everyone for attending our February meeting and hope everyone gets as much pleasure out of the fellowship as I do. Regrettably, I forgot to recognize new members and guests. We had three guests who signed in, Jim Bassett, Jack Chase and Carroll Kaufmann. Welcome and hope you will return to future meetings. EAA--AOPA—FSF What do these letters mean to you? To me they represent the only chance we have to try and keep our freedom to fly when and where we want. If you follow where the TFR's are on the internet you will see more and more of them popping up every day, and if it wasn't for the work being done by AOPA and EAA, I think the whole country would be covered. I know some of you don't believe in some of the policies of these organizations, but please put that aside and JOIN and support them because in my opinion they are our only hope of keeping our freedom of flight. I want to thank Traci and Curtis McClung for their talk on Kitty Hawk. Very well done! Enough for now and hope to see you all at the March meeting, March 13th @ 10 a.m. Come early for coffee and doughnuts. We will be planning for our March 20th fly-in. | Meeting Minutes – a new addition to our Newsletter!
EAA CHAPTER 1236 – MINUTES, February 14, 2004 Lorene Washburn, Secretary, Treasurer The meeting was held on February 14, 2004, at 10:00 A.M. in the Washburn’s hangar. There were 46 members present with 3 guests. We were pleased to welcome Jim Bassett, Jack Chase and Carroll Kaufmann. Ollie opened the meeting with a review of the airspace limitations for the weekend due to the President’s appearance in Florida. He pointed out that it is very important to check the TFR's before making any flight to make sure you are not breaking air space. Several Chapter members attended an AOPA seminar this past week in Ocala. At that seminar TFR's was a topic. Chuck Kessler recalled that you can substitute your Pilot Magazine for a technical bulletin to lobby for General Aviation. Ollie pointed out that both AOPA and EAA are working hard to keep our airspace available to us. If it wasn’t for these two organizations there would be a lot less airspace available to General Aviation. The minutes and financial reports for the January meeting were read and approved by the membership. Dick McLean reported that we have five new members, making a total of 100. As of the meeting date 72 members had renewed and 28 have yet to renew. He noted that there is a sign-up sheet for caps and name tags for new members. Ollie reported that there is a form available for anyone wishing to join the National EAA. If the applicant uses this form, or applies on-line, the local chapter will receive a $10.00 rebate for each new member. Shirts are available for order with your individual airplane, name, N-number and the chapter number. There are forms available to order these shirts. Jane Craig reported that there are other features on the website besides the Newsletter. One of them is Members News and Articles. She is looking for topics and would like to include any news of interest that any member might have. Another is Pilots and Planes. If you are a pilot, have a plane, or if you rent a plane, or even fly a friend’s plane, she would like to have a photo of you standing next to that plane to include on the website in Pilots and Planes. Ollie reported that we have received official notification from EAA National Headquarters that our request for a Chapter 1 event scheduled for March 20th fly-in has been approved and we are covered. Judie Betz announced that there will be a Young Eagles flight at Leesburg sometime in March - the date to be announced later. Anyone interested in participating in the Young Eagles Program should contact Judie at 352-821-2828. Ollie added that this is a very worthy program and introduces more young people to aviation. Dave Karl reported that he now has 30 hours flight time on his RV6 and only has 10 more to go before they can take off. He says 7 to 10 days and he will have his 40 hours. He and Lucille plan their first flight to be Carrolton, Georgia. On projects, Doug Craig and Leonard Elmendorf are working on Doug’s Murphy Elite. The tail is done and the fuselage is half finished. Bill McAuliffe is building a RV9-A. He has the tail kit done and is waiting on the wing kit. Says it is very easy to build. Dick McLean reported that he and Herb Clark finished both Stearmans before January lst and they are gone. They also finished the Pitts and it is gone to Tampa. Dick now has a project for himself. He found an Acro-Sport II, 1978 kit, in Leesburg. It had been sitting for many years. The fuselage is welded but had a lot of rust. He now has that cleaned up and is building new ribs. Hugh Johnson is looking for a RV6-A or 7-A that is flying. He also has his Cessna 182 for sale - in good shape. Dick Krause and Judy Betz flew to the Bahamas recently and will report on that trip at the next meeting. There were no unusual occurrences. Traci and Curtis McClung were our speakers of the day. They gave a very interesting talk on their visit to the Centennial of Flight. It was an excellent presentation and Traci “Took you there!” Her excitement and enthusiasm made it even more interesting. We thank you both, Traci and Curtis. The meeting was concluded with the 50-50 raffle. Judy Brown had the winning ticket. The meeting was then adjourned. The next meeting will be same place, same time, on March 13, 2004. Dick McLean reported that on AOPA’s website there was an answer to the question, “What is a congested area?”. The answer, according to NTSB, is that a congested area is: 10 houses and a school, a university campus, beach along the highway, camp with people on a dock or children on shore. He suggested it would be a good idea to stay at a proper altitude if there is any question as to the congested area. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
