| EAA CHAPTER 1236 - June 2004 Newsletter |
| Vice-President’s Ramblings by Clint Rule
On behalf of the EAA I would like to thank Ollie and Lorene Washburn for their very generous willingness to allow our meetings to occur in their hangar, even when they are not there. That is certainly beyond the call of duty !!!!!! Even tho' we try, I am sure there is some cleanup after they get home. Thank you very much to Jane Craig for her participation at the head table. It was greatly appreciated. The willingness of our members to get up and speak on their various experiences and progress on projects adds interest to the necessary mundane parts of the meeting. Our thanks to Judie Betz, Paul Wilson, Bill McAuliffe, and Doug Craig for their interesting presentations. All members please remember that there is a motion before group to continue the 50/50 drawings after tables and chairs are bought. The drawing to be dedicated to obtaining tools such as Borescope and other occasionally used items for the benefit of the members' airplanes. Concerns expressed to me after the meeting included the fact that some members don't fly and don't have airplanes. There was also concern for the rules which would govern the administration and use of these items: including where they would be housed. It is important to remember that participation in these drawings is strictly voluntary. Please gather your thoughts for the next meeting so you can have your say on this matter. The motion was only tabled and is still on the floor to be voted on. Hurry back, Ollie ! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
| WELCOME NEW MEMBERS |
| EAA Chapter 1236 Meeting Minutes - June 12, 2004
The Meeting was called to order by Vice-President Clint Rule promptly at 10:00 a.m. with 39 members attending. A motion to accept the published minutes of the previous meeting was made and seconded. The financial report was read and accepted by the general membership. Clint noted that Randy Hartigan's donation of his 50/50 prize had made a difference. Guests Dan Brooks and Tammy Tobin were recognized and welcomed. “Old business or unfinished business?” Clint asked. Dick Krause asked for suggestions from the Membership on an idea that he and Al Nase have been working on for several months: “Is it feasible for money to be raised for the purchase of tools and equipment which would belong to and be used by the Chapter Membership? - Tools and equipment choices to be determined by the Membership?” Possibilities mentioned were spark-plug cleaning equipment, spraying equipment to prevent corrosion in aircraft, or a borescope. Total cost for those three examples was estimated to be around $2,500. A suggestion was made for a “Tools and Equipment Raffle”. A motion to raise the money was made and seconded but was tabled for a month. Our on-going 50/50 raffles have been for tables and chairs. It was suggested that the status of this account be determined, and then after the final purchase of tables and chairs, the raffle would be held exclusively for the “Tools and Equipment Fund”. A final vote on this is scheduled for our July 10th meeting. Any suggestions or inquiries should be directed to Dick Krause (821-2446) or Al Nase (821-4711). “On new business”, Clint reminded the Membership that Oshkosh starts on July 27th. As for the Sport Pilot License, Rex Wyatt indicated that a two-year flight review is still necessary. As a note of interest, Clint stated that the EAA last year built 707 airplanes. For comparison - Cessna built 588, Cirrus built 469, Diamond built 228, and New Piper built 185. Judie Betz indicated that Melrose Landing is having breakfast on the second Saturday of the month again, and there is plenty of time to get there and back before our meeting! Judie, Young Eagles Chairman, said they hope to also have Young Eagles at that time at Melrose, and 1236 members might want to help out. Dick McLean, our Membership Chairman, had indicated that membership is still growing. Jane Craig, Newsletter/Website, pointed out that there are five airplanes in the “Classifieds” this month. She would like to know if anyone is having trouble receiving the Newsletter. “ Any aircraft problems, unusual occurrences?”, Clint asked. Judie Betz told (from personal experience) of the importance of giving your plane a thorough inspection. Even a few missing screws can cause big problems and cost a lot of money. Clint showed a “worn out” part which failed an AD. It was there only for backup and never used. Vibration in the engine compartment had worn it out. Paul Wilson recently toured the Cessna Plant in Independence, Kansas. Paul has owned a Cessna 182 for over 20 years and shared with us his experience of seeing Cessnas built. Bill McAuliffe is building an RV9A and showed us some of the parts and workmanship that goes into building this plane. Doug Craig is waiting for the final inspection of his Murphy Elite. He and Leonard Elmendorf have finished it in just over 6 months. It will be at the next meeting. Jerry Degayner suggested that the Membership should remember to wear their name tags. (See Chuck Mosely if you need one.) Bruce Snowdon won the 50/50 drawing. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and seconded. Clint Rule invited everyone to stay and enjoy cake in celebration of Dave Karl’s birthday. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Please note our next meeting will be July 10th at the Washburn’s hangar. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |

| SAFETY – At Love’s Landing! The contour of the land on Runways 36 and 18 at Love’s Landing does not allow you to see the far end of the runway at the beginning of your take off. Keep in mind that radios are not required, and on a still day a ”radio-less” airplane could be taking off in the opposite direction to you. For departure on 18, engine run up and preparation before take off can be done where visibility is good - across from the “Pink House” (Clint & Mary Rule’s), that is if you and your plane are comfortable with a shorter take-off distance. Also be aware that a “radio-less” airplane could be crossing your path at the juncture of the 36/18 and 09/27 runways. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
| AOPA AIRPORT WATCH PROGRAM
USE YOUR EYES AND EARS TO KEEP OUR AIRPORTS SAFE Here's what to look for: Pilots who appear under the control of someone else. Anyone trying to access an aircraft through force — without keys, using a crowbar or screwdriver. Anyone who seems unfamiliar with aviation procedures trying to check out an airplane. Anyone who misuses aviation lingo — or seems too eager to use all the lingo People or groups who seem determined to keep to themselves. Any members of your airport neighborhood who work to avoid contact with you or other airport tenants. Anyone who appears to be just loitering, with no specific reason for being there. Any out-of-the-ordinary videotaping of aircraft or hangars. Aircraft with unusual or obviously unauthorized modifications. Dangerous cargo or loads — explosives, chemicals, openly displayed weapons — being loaded into an airplane. Anything that strikes you as wrong — listen to your gut instinct, and then follow through. Pay special attention to height, weight, and the individual's clothing or other identifiable traits. Use your common sense. Not all these items indicate terrorist activity. When in doubt, check it out! Check with airport staff or call the National Response Center at 1-866-GA-SECURE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
