EAA CHAPTER 1236
Newsletter
March 2004
President's Ramblings
Finally a good Saturday weatherwise where our members from other airports got to fly in.  Now if we can just keep this good weather for our fly-in, I'll really be happy.  It is always nice to see so many aircraft fly in.  After the meeting we decided to test the air as well.  So we fired up the RV and along with
Dave and Lucille Karl in their RV and the two fellows that flew in from GA (wrong day for the bar-bq) we headed off for Ocala for a good lunch and a visit with Sam.  Hopefully the two from GA will return for the bar-bq.
We had several people sign up to volunteer their help for the fly-in, and we can always use more help.  Just arrive early Saturday morning, and we'll have the coffee ready to get you started.  Also Friday at 4 we will be setting up the tables and chairs, etc.  Can probably find a coke or whatever after the work is done.
I hope you all are happy with the way the meetings are going and if you have any suggestions or ideas for future meetings please let us know.  Also if you or someone you know has a topic of interest to the group and are willing to give a short talk, definitely let us know as it is hard for one or two people to line up speakers.
Along these same lines Jane is looking for stories of interest to put in the newsletter; your first airplane, your first airplane ride, some of your flying experiences,i.e. the day the engine quit, caught on top, where am I?  You get the idea, just send an article to Jane.
      I want to thank
Judi Betz and Dick Krause for their informative talk on flying to the Bahamas and congratulations to Traci McClung on her winning of the 50/50 drawing.   Cheers------Ollie

EAA CHAPTER 1236 MINUTES
  Lorene Washburn, Secretary, Treasurer
The meeting was held in the Washburn's hangar on March 13, 2004, at 10.00 a.m.  Ollie opened the meeting by welcoming our two guests, Harry Keller and Dick Long, and our two newest members, Joe Bongiovanni and Jon Cockes.
The up-coming March 20th fly-in was discussed and volunteers were solicited for the parking of airplanes and transporting people.  There was a good response to this request for help.
Judie Betz reported that the Young Eagles program is still looking for pilots with planes to give rides to young people for build for the future of General Aviation.  There are tentative plans to arrange a Young Eagles flight out of Leesburg Airport when we have enough planes and pilots to warrant the scheduling.
Jane Craig is looking for old photos of any members taken with their planes for the Planes and Pilots - From the Past on the website.
Chuck Mosley suggested that, since we had such a good turnout last year from the Hangar Flyers at the Villages, we invite them back again this year for a pot-luck luncheon/fly-in.   Bill Rogan offered to contact the person in charge of the Hangar Flyers to invite them and set a date for this event. More on this later.
On problems encountered with aircraft, Ollie reported for Bill Metz (who is in Canada at the moment) that due to a low compression check on his Piper Clipper he had Bob Hitchcock check the cylinders. They were found to be all bad and Bill now has 4 new cylinders waiting to be installed when he returns from Canada.
Beth Rodahaver was given a loud round of applause and cheer on having passed her FAA written private pilot's test. Congratulations Beth!!!
Joe Bongiovanni gave us another place to fly for lunch. Williston Airport has a lunch the last Saturday of every month.
Approval was asked for the expenditure of funds for tables and chairs.  The motion was made and approved, so there will be 2 new tables and 12 new chairs for the March 20th fly-in.
The winner of the 50-50 raffle was Traci McClung. The raffle produced $52.00 for the club funds.      Our speakers for the meeting were Judie Betz and Dick Krause. They gave us a very informative talk on their trip to the Bahamas. Thanks Judie and Dick for the information you passed on for those who wish to take this trip.
The meeting was adjourned and the next meeting scheduled for April 10, 2004, in the Washburn*s hangar at 10:00 a.m.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

MAJOR REDUCTION IN HOMEBUILT AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS  -  FAA CREDITS EAA SAFETY PROGRAMS - Figures released by the FAA indicate that the homebuilt-aircraft accident rate has dropped 25 percent for the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2003. Over that same period, the fatal accident rate has dropped an even more remarkable 36 percent. These figures are especially impressive because registrations of amateur-built aircraft have reached record numbers.  Part of the credit goes to the EAA Technical Counselors who are dedicated to the EAA philosophy of "member-helping-member" and promoting safety in aviation.  EAA 1236 has three Counselors at this time -  Leonard Elmemdorf, Chuck Mosely and Al Nase.
Leeward Air Ranch recently hosted  an RV-ators Fly-in.  EAA 1236 members in attendance included this foursome engaged in conversation and enjoying
the sunshine.

Costly Pilot Error
After the pilot miscalculated at an airshow  in Idaho, he was forced to eject.  The aircraft at that point was 140 ft. above the ground and crashed eight-tenths of a second later.  He had minor injuries and other than destroying the Thunderbird F-16, no other damage to civilian or military property occurred.  However, the destroyed aircraft was valued at $20.4 million.
