| EAA 1236 NEWSLETTER - October 2004 |
| President’s Ramblings
It is now 1:30 Wed. afternoon, and Jane says it's time for me to put together something for the newsletter. So having just returned from a lunch flight to Deland for one of their good hamburgers (second only to Kurt's at Ocala), I'll see what I can put together. This Wed. was the first in about 2 months that the gang from Woods & Lakes have been to Deland where they usually go on Wed., and I have been joining them as long as they don't throw me a curve and go to Flagler. I would like to see more pilots from Love's join in these flights but seems like everyone goes their own way. However some of us have been going to Tony's at Lakeland about every Sun. morning which is a nice flight and good food. Also you don't need a fast airplane to go as last Sun. we pulled the RV out to go but it didn't want to run right so we pushed it back in the hgr. and got the Pa-12 out. A little slower but we got to view the FL.countryside, and we were only 14 min. behind the time we were to meet, and no, I didn't save any gas as the extra time in the Pa-12 makes up for the fuel burn in the RV. Everyone should have a spare airplane. (Just kidding) Bye the way, I got the electronic ignition working the way it's supposed to again. The company (Lightspeed Engineering) was good enough to send me a loaner brain box while I sent mine back for repairs. They said it was contaminated with fuel and oil, and at the last meeting I was told of a fix for that. Things are looking good for the Nov. 6th fly-in, and we are hoping and praying for good flying weather that day. Remember the 7th is the rain date. We look forward to having a large number of RV's fly in, and hopefully we'll expand our bank account enough to finish buying the tables. As I've said before, the tables and chairs belong to the chapter and if you're having a family function etc. feel free to borrow some tables and chairs. We just ask that you sign out for them and return in a reasonable amount of time. Also don't forget that the end of this month (28-31) is the Lightplane Expo. at Sebring. If you've been thinking of getting into LSA you should be able to see just about everything that is available at the Expo. That same weekend Deland is having a weekend fly-in that they hope will become an annual event. Too bad both events are on the same weekend. And now for a wrap-up. It appears that the same officers will be running the chapter again next year. I hope this is a vote of confidence as to what we have been doing. Lorene and I have enjoyed the past year although we did find that it's a fair amount of work, but being retired we do find time to fit the work in amongst our flying. However I think the person that puts in the most effort is Jane and the newsletter. From just trying to put together these ramblings I can only image what it it's like to put the newsletter together. That's all folks---Nov 6th Fly-in--Next meeting Nov.13th---Tentative Christmas party date is Fri. Dec. 10th. Ollie Washburn ------- ollie-6a@prodigy.net 250-8988 |
| EAA 1236 Minutes – October 16, 2004 Lorene Washburn, Secretary, Treasurer
Ollie Washburn called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM and welcomed the guests and returning snowbirds. He asked that everyone check the sign-in sheet and fill in the missing EAA numbers and expiration dates. We had a total of 42 members present, with 5 guests. Ollie welcomed Dave and Kristine Babcock, Buddy Babcock, Rob Pitschman and William Howard. William is currently a member of the Leesburg Chapter of EAA. Ollie invited our guests to join our chapter. He talked about the fly-in at Thomasville and that we had 15 members from our chapter attend. The fly-in had a good turnout considering the weather in the gulf, which kept a lot of people away. There were a lot of interesting planes there, one in particular, a 1928 Stinson Detroiter. He was very impressed with this airplane. Ollie reminded the group that President Bush will be in the Villages on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and there should be no flying during that time. He also reminded them of the TFR's for the 16th and 18th for Florida. The end of October will be the Sport Aviation Expo to be held in Sebring. The have sold 100 booths. This will run from Oct. 28 thru 31. He suggested that for anyone interested in light sport airplanes this would be the place to see them. Ollie asked for approval of the minutes from September. These are published in the newsletter, plus they are posted on the bulletin board at the meeting. The minutes were approved as written. The financial report was read and approved by the membership. Ollie reminded everyone of the November 6 fly-in in the Washburn hangar and asked that flyers be posted at the other airports in the chapter, plus advising anyone with an RV about the fly-in. He also asked that anyone willing to help with the fly-in put their name on a sign-up sheet. This is a fund-raiser for Chapter 1236. Chuck Mosely advised the group of an Art Sale to be held on November 20th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This will include aviation art, wildlife art, jackets, and glass jewelry. This will be a combination social event and art sale, held in Mosley's hanger at the south gate of Love's Landing. For those flying in golf-cart shuttle will be provided from your plane to the Mosely's. The north gate will be open for those driving in. Ollie announced that John Love has given us a gate number for the use of Chapter 1236 members to use for entrance to Love's Landing for chapter meetings. John Love stressed that if this number is used for any time other than chapter meetings, or is abused in any way, it will be withdrawn. IF YOU NEED ACCESS TO THIS NUMBER PLEASE CONTACT OLLIE WASHBURN AT 352-750-5312, OR ollie-6a@.prodigy.net. The gate will be open for the November meeting in order for everyone to have time to obtain this gate code. After that, the gate will remain closed. The up-coming Chapter Christmas party was addressed. A tentative date was set for December 10, and this will be either finalized or changed at the November meeting. Due to the large number in the chapter it was decided not to have the exchange of gifts, but instead have only the raffle for gifts. This will give more time to socialize and enjoy the party. It was suggested that instead of the exchange of gifts we have a donation of food items to be given to some worthy organization. This will be discussed further at the November meeting. It had been announced that final nomination of officers AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS would be held at the October meeting. This was in error as a later edition of the rules from EAA states that the election of officers will be held at the November meeting. Therefore, the October meeting was the final date for nominations. There were no new nominations. The nominations at the October meeting were to retain the present officers. Election of Officers will be held at the November meeting. It was pointed out that only current members of the national organization of EAA are eligible to vote. Dick McLean announced that NASA is looking for military planes to be put on display at the Nascar Speedway. This can be for 3 days or 30 days - at the pilot's discretion. Please contact Dick McLean at 352-821-1150 if you have an interest in doing this. Or you can contact him at mclredflier@aol.com. Jane Craig would like to update the classified ads, restorations and homebuilts for the Newsletter. Ollie mentioned an aircraft problem - with the electronic ignition. It was found that it was contaminated by fuel and oil. It was repaired by the manufacturer and is now working okay. Chuck Mosely told about the Yankee Air Museum fire at Willow Run in Detroit. It burned to the ground with everything inside being burned. They did manage to get the B-17, the B-25 and the C-47 out of the hangar. These are all flying airplanes. Judy Betz announced that the Florida chapter of the Yankee Air Musium is trying to establish a museum at the Dunnellon Airport. Ollie cautioned everyone who has a Cub to not let the air get too low in the tires. If too low it can cause the wheel to spin around and cut off the valve stem. This is an expensive lesson. Harris Wiese gave a very informatiive and interesting talk on safety. It was relative to how a passenger can help the pilot by looking for other aircraft. This included shadows on the ground, position of aircraft above, below or at same altitude. He talked about clearing turns, plus looking outside the aircraft and not keeping your focus inside the plane. Randy Ott gave an interesting talk about his recent trip to Bolivia. He was sent to replace an aircraft which had been damaged and this was to supplement the operations of the airline Randy works for. He entertained us for a while about his experiences in Bolivia and Brazil and the problems of flying with no radar, no ILS, no VOR - ONLY an NDB. THANKS, RANDY. The 50-50 raffle was won by Gary Wimberly. He won $49.00. Ollie announced that there would be chili and hot dogs after the meeting. The meeting was adjourned, with the next meeting set for November 13, 2004 in the Washburn's hangar at 10:00 am. |
