EAA 1236 NEWSLETTER    September 2004
President’s Ramblings
Hurricanes, Hurricanes - I guess everyone is getting tired of nothing but hurricanes on the weather, and what do they have to do with airplanes anyway?  Well nothing if they are not bearing down on YOUR airplane.  We in Chapter 1236 have been lucky so far, only one damaged plane that I know of.  Several people and chapters in Georgia and Alabama have offered space to park aircraft and watch over them if pilots want to move their plane out of harms way.  Also most insurance companies will cover one half the cost of moving your aircraft ($500 on my policy) to a safer location.  Let us hope the storms are over for this year.
Sport pilot rules are now in effect and seems to be progressing well, and they are still tweaking some of the rules.  Who will be the first Sport Pilot in Chapter 1236?  There are several good looking Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) that are ready to come on the market.  I like the like the looks of the Rans S-7 and may get one if I sell my PA-12.  Anyone that is interested in LSA should be making plans to go to Sebring (SEF) Oct. 28-31 for the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo. (www.sport-aviation-expo.com)  The preplanning for this has been so successful that all 70 booths are sold out and now they are finding space to add more booths.  I believe they will be giving demonstration rides in the various LSA. so if you have one in mind this is the place to go and check it out.
If anyone in the Chapter knows of any fly-ins please let Jane Craig know so she can put them in the newsletter or send out a special notice.  Since the passing of Jerry Rooks I haven't been able to find any listing of events.  I sure do miss Jerry and his weekly listing of events around the state.
As you will note other places in the newsletter the October meeting has been moved back one week to the third Saturday of the month.  This was done because so many of our members (me included) go to the Thomasville Ga. fly-in which is Oct. 8-10.  This fly-in has become one of the premier events in the Southeast and with good weather attracts 400-500 aircraft of all types.  So mark this on your calendar and hope to see you there. Their web site is www.thomasvilleflyin.com  and they list the nearby motels which are hard to come by later.  They also have camping and provide transportation to the motels.
You still have time to nominate the officers of your choice at the October meeting, and also the officers will be voted in at the October meeting so we hope to see a large turnout. Also we are planning to have a hotdog and chili lunch after the meeting. We also need to plan for the November 6th fly-in.
That's all I have for now.  See you at Thomasville.
                                   Ollie Washburn
Our condolences to the family and friends of Sam Love, Sr.
Sam founded and developed  Love’s Landing Aviation Community.

Sam was often seen with John attending EAA functions..
EAA CHAPTER 1236 MINUTES -  September 11, 2004
      Lorene Washburn, Secretary, Treasurer.
The meeting was opened by Ollie Washburn welcoming everyone and inviting them to coffee and donuts.  He also expressed our thanks for those attending in spite of the problems hurricane Frances gave us.  We had a total of 30 members present.
Ollie announced the sad news that Sam Love, our developer, passed away.  He was 80 years old and had lead a very interesting life with varied interests.  The meeting was held short so that those wishing to attend the graveside services could do so.  We will miss Sam very much, as will many others.
Ollie requested that everyone please sign in and update their EAA number and expiration date.  He stressed the need for this information as we must have it to send to National Headquarters by December 1st in order to keep our chapter in good standing.  Also, for those not signing the roster, you will receive either an e-mail or letter asking for this information.  You may contact lorenewashburn@hotmail.com or call at 352-750-5312.
There was an e-mail from Troy Toelle posted on the bulletin board entitled “Help for EAA Chapter Members Evacuating Aircraft from Florida”.   It listed eight (8) EAA Chapters in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, who had volunteered to help with the coordination of tie-down space, hanger space, etc...for their fellow EAA Chapter Members in Florida who needed to evacuate their aircraft from Florida due to hurricane Ivan.  This was deeply appreciated.  It was pointed out that insurance companies will pay half of the cost to relocate under these conditions.
An update on Sport Pilot Implementation Timeline was posted on the bulletin board .  It was noted that you have until the end of October to transition to “fat ultralights” and two-place trainers.
Al Nase reported on their trip north, during which they visited the Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy  Museum at Dulles Airport.  He was very impressed with the size of it and the varied aircraft exhibited.  He mentioned the Concord, the B-29 Bomber and space shuttle.  He brought a number of photos to share with the chapter members.
Ollie asked for approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, which were published in the newsletter.   This was approved.  Also the financial report was read and approved by the membership
There were no guests or new members.
Ollie announced that it is time for nominations of officers.  He reviewed that according to the by-laws nominations are to be made this month and next month.  In addition the by-laws state that the last meeting before November 1st will be the annual meeting.  A nomination was made, and seconded, to retain the present officers.  So, the October meeting will be the annual meeting, any additonal nominations will be accepted, and then elections will be held.   A letter will be sent to all members advising them of the annual meeting. It is hoped that we will have a large turnout for this meeting.   It is planned to have chili, hot dogs, etc. after the meeting.  If anyone wishes to help with this it would be appreciated.
It was pointed out that the meeting for October conflicts with the Thomasville Fly-in, and a number of our members go to this fly-in.  It was suggested that we have the October meeting on the 16th instead of the 9th.  This was approved by the membership.
There was a reminder of the fly-in we have planned for November 6th at the Washburn’s hanger. This will be a Chapter 1236 Fly-In and  will be a fund raiser for the chapter to hopefully finish buying the needed tables and chairs.  Ollie asked for help in parking planes, set-up, etc.   A flyer will be available at the October meeting.
There was nothing on membership of Young Eagles program.  No aircraft problems reported.
Hurricane Frances caused a lot of destruction for many people, but the members of Chapter 1236 faired pretty well considering.  A lot of people were without power for a week but they came together and helped one another.  At this writing power is restored and our members are more comfortable.
Jane Craig is still looking for articles and photos, especially “photos from the past”.  (Ollie supported her request by saying that getting news for the newsletter is a difficult task that all newsletter editors have.)  She is also starting a feature in the newsletter on recommended aviation reading.  The members are asked if they have any good books they’d like to share to get in touch with her.  She is also featuring some of the articles that Judy Betz writes for the Ocala Star Banner, which can be accessed on the website under “Judy’s Columns”.
We had a 50-50 raffle.  Jane Craig won the 50-50 in the sum of $23.00.  She, in turn, contributed it back into the fund for tables and chairs.  This made a total of $46.00 added to the fund.  THANK YOU, JANE!  Ollie expressed appreciation, but we don’t expect this to become routine because it’s nice have someone walk away with their share.
A motion was made, seconded, and approved to adjourn the meeting.  The next meeting is scheduled for October 16, 2004 at 10:00 AM in the Washburn’s hangar.

Flyboys is the true story of young American airmen who were shot down over Chichi Jima in WW2.  Eight of these young men were captured and taken prisoner,
and what then happened to them had remained a secret for almost 60 years.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON YOUR OWN CERTIFIED AIRCRAFT - 32 items are permitted
FAR Part 43 specifies who may do what to an aircraft in the way of maintenance, repair or alteration. It requires that only properly certified mechanics work on aircraft and "okay" them for return to service. However, it does allow preventive maintenance to be performed by a certificated pilot, holding at least a Private certificate, on an aircraft owned or operated by that pilot, provided the aircraft is not used in commercial service.
