EAA CHAPTER 1236

February 2005
President’s Ramblings
The second meeting of the year has come and gone already and we had a record turnout.  The first time that Lorene has run out of coffee and donuts.  She says next time there will be plenty. Several of the members flew in as it was a beautiful morning although a little cool.  We like to see members fly to the meetings as this gives something for the other members to look at and drool.
As most of you know, Lorene and I missed the Jan. meeting as we were on our way to Colorado to pick up our new to us Wagabond which has total time of 800 hrs.and 400 smoh on O-290 D2 Lyc.  It was an interesting trip, icy interstate by Wichita, snow on the ground at Colorado Springs and wind and rain on the way back.  On the return trip we decided to spend an extra day with the kids in Tulsa and this got me mixed up with a weather system causing us to spend a couple of extra days with the kids.  They would go to work in the morning and find us still there when they returned from work.  Finally left Tulsa and got as far as Starkville Miss. where the line boy let me put the airplane in their large hanger which was empty except for a lone Cessna 140 in the corner.  The next morning I woke to rain and low ceilings so it was another day in downtown Starkville.  About 10 AM I got a phone call from the airport saying not to worry if I saw something on local TV about the roof blowing off a hanger.  Seems that in the early morning a violent squall line had come through and took the roof off the college hanger.  I sure thanked the Lord and the lineboy for getting the Wagabond inside for the night.  The next day I had a good flight all the way to Ocala where the ceiling was 800 to 1000 the rest of way to Love's.  So far we really enjoy the Wagabond and everything has been working as advertised.
For those of you that were not at the Feb meeting we had a guest, Gene Grough, that gave in interesting talk on prop balancing.  A couple of other members and myself had him come back the next day and do our props. I had the RV done and after he finished another member and myself took a short flight to see if there was a difference in the vibration level.  I honestly could not tell much difference although Gene's machine showed he brought the level down quite a bit.  On the landing back at Love's I see the old Co-pilot trick still works; when the copilot pushes back in his seat, pull back on the stick.  Makes for a good landing every time.
The next meeting date is the same as Eston Spears RV fly-in at Leeward Air Ranch so I hope we can finish the meeting in time to get there for the great lunch he puts on.  If anyone from the Chap. would like to go they need to send Eston an e-mail and he will send you back an invitation.  This is required by Leeward.  His e-mail is ewspears@comcast.net
Also at the Feb. meeting we got approval from the members present to have our semi-annual Chap 1236 and RV fly-in on Mar.26th.   It will be much the same as in the past, except this time it will be $6/person which will include the drinks, coffee and donuts.  This is an open fly-in to anyone and we hope for good weather and a great turnout.
That's all for this time, keep em flying and come to the next meeting  (March 12th).
                                                                    Ollie Washburn -- ollie-6a@prodigy.net
EAA 1236’s Youngest Member
We enjoyed seeing little Piper McClung for the first time at our  February 12th meeting.  Although she wasn’t too impressed with us (slept through it all), we were very impressed by her!
What a delightful little baby girl!  Congratulations to “Piper’s Mom” and “Piper’s Dad” (check out the hats!).

Meeting Minutes – February 12, 2005     Lorene Washburn – Secretary, Treasurer
Ollie Washburn called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM by welcoming everyone and thanking Clint Rule and Julie Dane for filling in for the Washburn’s at the January meeting while they took a trip to Colorado to pick up an airplane.  We had a total of 63 present, which included 57 members, 5 guests,( Stephen and Beth Cockrell, Bob Harper, and our guest speaker, Gene Grough and his wife),  and one new member, Donny Mains.
Ollie received in the mail  a certificate for a Kit Log with a value of $49.95.  This was made available to anyone interested in building a plane, for logging materials, etc. while building.  Dick McLean accepted this certificate.
Ollie announced a program for a mountain flying tour which is offered by Blue Goose Aviation, Inc.  The tour includes mountain flying, horseback riding, western museums, and more.  The tour has a limit of 8 airplanes at one time.  If you are interested you can visit their website at www.bluegooseaviation.com, or call Joe Kuberka at 719-683-6504. Joe has been a member of EAA since 1983.   They will also have a booth at Sun-N-Fun.
EAA is trying to update their amateur built DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative) Program .  They need recommendations from EAA members as to who inspected and certified their aircraft, the name of the inspector, and whether or not they would recommend that particular individual. They would then put it on their web page.  The current EAA AB DAR web page is at: http://members.eaa.org/home/govt/help/ab_dar.asp.  This request was sent from Randy Hansen, Government Relations Director of EAA.
We are constantly looking for different restaurants to fly to.  The two newest ones are near Crystal River Airport, within walking distance.  One is a Greek/American, which is about a 10 minute walk.  This one is open for breakfast.  The other is a Barbeque restaurant with full salad bar, which is about 10 minutes further. This one opens at 11:00 AM There is a sidewalk the full length.  They are both on the same side of the road as the airport, to the north.  Also, Avon Park is now open for a pancake breakfast the second Sunday of each month.
On March 12th Leeward Air Ranch is having an INVITATIONAL RV FLY-IN.  If you are interested you should contact Esten Spears at ewspears@comcast.net.  He can also be reached at 352-347-3523.  He will then send a Personalized Invitation containing itinerary, flying and driving location and arrival information.  This is also our monthly meeting date, but we will try to keep it short so anyone wishing to attend can make both.
The minutes of the January meeting were accepted as published in the newsletter.  The financial report was read and accepted by the membership.
There was also a financial summary for July - December.  Also there was a summary for the entire year for the 50-50 account.  These were all posted on the bulletin board.
We received a very nice thank-you from Shores Volunteer Skillsbank for the food that was collected and donated at Christmas time.  This was very much appreciated, especially coming right after the hurricane season.
Dick McLean reported that we have one new member, Donny Mains, who has been a member before but just re-joined.  He also asked for dues from anyone who hasn’t paid for 2005.
The proposed fly-in for March 26 was discussed.  It was agreed that this will be a Chapter Fly-In, with various others invited, but not open to the public.  “Others” include Woods-N-Lakes, Hobby Hill, Winter Haven Pilots Assn., the RV Group, and Love’s Landing.   Anyone should feel free to bring guests.  Because of limited space, etc., we try to limit the total to no more than 300.  There will be a donation requested of $6.00 per person, and this will include donuts & coffee, the full buffet, desert, tea , and soft drinks.  Donuts & coffee from 9:00 on and lunch at 12:00 N.  This was approved by the group and the final details will be discussed at the March meeting.
Bill McAuliffe advised that the Lakeland Tower was receptive to having a group tour of the tower.  After discussion it was decided that it would be better to have it on a Saturday morning, after meeting at Tony’s Airside Restaurant for breakfast.  The plan would be to meet at 8:30 for breakfast, with the tour immediately following.  Because of prior commitments of several of those who would like to go it is suggested that this be postponed until March 5th.
Ray Brown advised that there is a raffle for a Swift, 180 HP, constant speed, with good panel.  There will be 995 tickets sold for $100 each.  First prize will be the Swift; 2nd prize $1000, 3rd prize $1000, 4th prize $500, and 5th prize $500.  Anyone interested should contact Ray Brown 352-259-3117.
Jane Craig asked for feedback on how people are receiving the website.  She noted that there will be two new articles in Judie Betz’s column.   She also asked for updates of pictures.  If you are a pilot she would like your picture taken in front of the plane you fly, whether you own it, rent it, borrow, etc.  She also needs an update of the fly-in restaurants. Donna Bell is working on that.  If anyone has any updates on the various subjects on the website Jane needs to know: 352-821-2807.
It was noted that Judie Betz had a goal to fly every day in January.  She reached this goal in spite of weather.
Young Eagles: Judie urged anyone who flies Young Eagles to please let her know.  As a result of reaching our goal to fly 10 Young Eagles in 2004 we received a beautiful glass paperweight with the Young Eagles emblem etched in the center.  She reminded everyone that a lot of the expenses of flying Young Eagles is tax deductible.  A group of young people recently visited Love’s Landing for a hanger tour.  Later they will be coming back for a Young Eagle Flight.  That will be announced later.
Harris Wiese gave a safety talk on wind and how it affects an airplane when taxiing and flying.  He reminded us of the hazards of wind - the options of taking off, or not taking off, in the wind, but the fact that there is no option when it comes to landing.  He explained the positions of the controls for taxiing with a tail wind, and how to judge the wind when taking off.  A big thanks to Harris for trying to keep us safe.
Our guest speaker, Gene Grough, gave a very informative talk on dynamic prop balancing.  He was very detailed in his information.  He stressed the importance of having a prop balanced well.   The prop is balanced to cruise rpm.  He has a mobile service for $250.00 and will come to your location.
This compares to $350 to $400 at other services.   As a result of his talk there were several at the meeting who signed up for this service, Ollie being one.
The 50-50 raffle was won by Tracy McClung in the amount of $64.00 Congratulation, Tracy - again!!  Also, thanks for bringing our newest EAA member, PIPER.   She’s beautiful!.
A motion was made, seconded, and approved to adjourn the meeting.  The next meeting is scheduled for March 12, 2005, at 10:00 AM  in the Washburn’s hanger.

EAA’s Aviation Services - from Brenda Anderson – EAA Chapter Administrator
EAA members are one call, email or letter away from a wide range of technical aviation services available from the Aviation Services Department at EAA.  First and foremost, the Aviation Services Team is responsible for answering member technical inquiries relating to pilot and aircraft issues.  This one-on-one consulting covers everything from “How do I register my homebuilt?” to “What’s involved in the A&P exam” to “How do I convert my ultralight for the new sport pilot rule?” and more.
Experienced pilots, aircraft owners, homebuilders, ultralighters and sport pilot specialists staff the department.  Their personal and professional experience enable them to field just about any technical aviation question that comes their way.  And if they can’t answer your question right away, they’ll do the research needed to help guide you to the right resource or solution.  EAA’s in-house library is an additional resource the Aviation Services team counts on for information and the library is also available to members visiting the Oshkosh headquarters offices.
The Aviation Services Department supplies a great deal of the technical information found on the Members Only portion of EAA’s website at www.eaa.org.  The Homebuilders Headquarters section on the site provides a wealth of information on building, maintaining and flying an experimental amateur built aircraft.  A significant amount of the content on EAA’s Sport Pilot website page is also developed by the Aviation Services team.
Two of the most popular “hands on” offerings from the Aviation Services Department are the Technical Counselor and Flight Advisor programs.  There’s a network of over 1,000 EAA members across the US who are registered EAA Technical Counselors that will come to your homebuilding location to provide in-progress inspection of your project.  The Flight Advisor program has several hundred EAA members who will provide advice and assistance on taking that first flight in your new homebuilt aircraft.
FAA Medical assistance is one of the individual offerings also available from the department. If a member needs assistance receiving a special issuance from the FAA, Aviation Services personnel will track the application all the through the process until approval to ensure that nothing derails your application.  In addition, we have a network of doctors that are AMEs and EAA members who volunteer their services to help other members retain or regain their medical.
For more information on your EAA Technical Services offerings please call 1-800 –EAA-INFO.  They’re ready for your questions!
