| Vice-President’s Ramblings
One of the problems in life is that people get " used to" something which can lead to taking it for granted. I feel that Chapter 1236 is very fortunate to have Ollie and Lorene allow us to use their Aerodrome for our hangar flying even when they're not here. I very much appreciate their "laissez - faire" in allowing us this privilege. Congrats to them on their new Wag-a-bond. It's a beauty. One of the most pleasurable parts of the meetings, for me, is seeing the members fly in to the meetings. This meeting we had 12 planes on the ramp (10 from Woods’n Lakes). In the past I have flown 972Q the 900 ft to the meeting. Flying is what we're all about. Let's keep it up. Bill McAuliffe made a suggestion to members flying to Lakeland: that they get together and request a tour of the tower. I appointed Bill a committee of one to do this, and I hope he will carry on!!!!!!! It's a good idea. I remember my first trip to TRACON at Boston's Logan airport. I was completely taken aback because they had no windows and couldn't see out. So you'll always learn something. Remember that on Feb 22 the Travel channel will feature a tour thru the Citabria plant on their "Made in America" show. Don't know the time. Thanks to the officers for their efforts . Leonard E. spoke about RV nosewheel problems. I hope a lot of dialog occurs on this subject. Remember the stonewalling on Bonanza V-tails. MAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE BLUE SKIES AND A TAILWIND………….. C Photos by Kim Fromal EAA CHAPTER 1236 MINUTES - January 8th, 2005 by Lorene Washburn, Sec., Treas. In the absence of Ollie Washburn, Clint Rule opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and explaining the trip Ollie and Lorene were on to purchase a Wagabond (home built) airplane. There were 52 people present. Clint then asked for approval of the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were approved as published in the newsletter. The financial report was then read by Julie Dane and this, too, was approved by the membership. Clint reported on a letter about the Sun-N-Fun Fly-In scheduled for April 12 - 18, 2005. The theme will be “Come Fly With Us”. Sun-N-Fun is offering their partner organizations and chapters the opportunity to promote their organization in the fly-in program book. The 1/8th page ad offered is normally a $360.00 value but will be offered to the chapter for $50.00. This offer is made so that organization groups like ours that provide Sun-N-Fun support will be recognized for our efforts. This offer was discussed and it was decided that our chapter is doing well. A motion was made, seconded, and had a unanimous approval to decline the offer. It was announced that a fly-in breakfast at Avon Park would be held on January 9th, and an RV fly-in would be held on January 14, 15 and 16 at Lakeland Sun-N-Fun. It was also announced that an RV fly-in is proposed for March 26 at the Washburn’s. This was discussed and it was noted that this is also Easter weekend. This will be discussed further at the February meeting. Clint pointed out that our chapter has an excellent website, thanks to Jane Craig, which includes a list of really good restaurants that you can fly into and the events that are ccurring. A copy was made available for anyone not having access to a computer. He also noted that an important part of the website is a complete list of the restoration and build projects that are in process. A copy of this was also made available for anyone interested. On February 22nd the Travel Channel, under the title “Made In America”, is having an hour program on a visit to the Citabria plant which might be of interest. Dues are due and payable in the amount of $10.00 for a single person and $15.00 for a family membership. These dues should be sent to Dick McLean, with checks made out to “EAA Chapter 1236", or can be paid in cash. Checks can be mailed to Dick McLean, P.O. Box 225, Weirsdale, FL 32195. Bill McAuliffe suggested we inquire about having a group tour of the Lakeland Tower. It was left that Bill will be a committee of one to check into this to see if Lakeland will allow a group tour, and how many people would like to participate. Anyone interested please contact Bill McAuliffe at 352-821-6848. Clint shared information on a Bonanza built in 1977 which had flaperons and full length spoilers which greatly increased performance on takeoff over obstacles. Dick McLean announced that we have several new members, one of whom is Bob Warner. Bob is Vice President of Membership with the national organization of EAA. Bob has purchased property at Love’s Landing and plans to build when he retires, which is not immediate. Even though Bob lives in he wanted to join in order to receive the newsletter and be informed of the happenings in the area. We also received membership dues from Wayne Henderson in Camarillo, California. He and his wife, Deborah, would like to join the chapter. Wayne and Deborah own the “pump house” property at Love’s. Allan and Jane Cragg dropped their membership as they are unable to attend meetings at this time. Dick shared a bit of news about an insert in the daily paper from Lowe’s in which they have weekly classes on building. It was surprising that on this day the class was on building a bi-plane. (Actually, this was a TOY plane!) Jane Craig asked for updates on the website pages. She noted that the picture that was put on the website of a mystery member, taken 50 years ago, has yet to be identified. She’s waiting for someone to recognize this person. She will put the answer in the newsletter when someone comes up with the answer. She also noted that the website includes Judie Betz’s column which is published in the Star Banner. She is currently putting in an article by Judie on Randy Ott. All of the articles pertain to aviation. Jane also pointed out that Rachel Williams writes a weekly column for the Daily Sun. In the issue dated January 3rd there was an article about her step-daughter who was in Thailand and just missed being in the Tsunami tragedy. Clint thanked all the ones who flew in for the meeting. He welcomed a guest of Cal Reynolds, Don Mains, who is also a prospective member. Judie Betz reported on the Young Eagles Program. On January 16 there is to be a group of school kids coming to Love’s Landing to see what an airport community is like. She will hand out flyers so that any of these young people who want a Young Eagle flight can contact her later. She reminded everyone that if you do fly anyone ndependently to be sure and let her know as she keeps a running total for credit with EAA. Leonard Elmendorf, Technical Advisor, gave a very detailed talk on the RV’s with nose gear. After reviewing information published in the Rvator magazine, AOPA reports, and other publications, it appears there is a ratio of 1% of RV’s with nose gear that have flipped over. VAN says there is something coming up to revise the nose gear. In the meantime anyone having a nose gear RV be sure the tire pressure is up and there is plenty of clearance on the wheel pants. Also, with an RV where your head is above the roll structure you should think twice about wearing a shoulder harness. If you do wear the shoulder harness leave room to duck your head. Once it flips you cannot get out without help from outside. Also, be careful about landing at unknown airstrips with soft surfaces. Clint Rule added that Rvr’s should be careful not to taxi through puddles because the water being thrown up inside the wheel pants can freeze around the wheel. Dick Krause talked about manufacturer’s timely inspection recommendations for aircraft and parts. Slick Magneto has an AD on the impulse couplings and an internal inspection every 500 hours on the magneto. On doing the first annual on his 172 RG he found a problem with the impulse coupling. He thinks it’s a good idea to have a 100 - 500 - 1000 hour inspection on these parts. Clint added that he is having a problem with the oil cooler on his Bonanza. There is oil under the cowling. In checking he found that the nut on top of the oil cooler had vibrated a hole in the metal. He is now getting this repaired. He also noted that there is an Airworthiness Information out on the PA-23, PA-24, PA-30, and PA-39. There is also an Airworthiness Information Bulletin out on the PA-18 on the landing gear. Further, there is an AD on all single engine Cessnas effective November 1, 2004 for shoulder harnesses. This includes Cessna 120 through 337. Dick McLean announced that Tracy and Curtis McClung are the proud parents of a baby girl, named “Piper”. Piper was born December 29, 2004. Baby and mother are doing fine. CONGRATULATIONS to the McClung family!!! It was reported that Miguel Cubano (Doc) is keeping in touch via e-mail from Japan. We miss you, Miguel, and wish you a speedy return to Love’s Landing. Judie Betz collected $80.00 for the 50-50 drawing, producing $40 for the chapter and $40 for the lucky winner, Hershel Dockery. Congratulations, Hershel! The meeting was adjourned, with the next meeting scheduled for February 12, 2005 in the Washburn’s hanger at 10:00 AM. |
