On October 20, EAA 1236
members Chuck
Mosely, President;
Ray Brown, Vice-president; and John Macon, former president; departed Love's Landing and
headed for the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, NC.
They were joined there by three other members of their team and four
members of the restoration staff from National Museum of Naval Aviation,
Pensacola, FL.
Their task was to disassemble an RF-4B Phantom II
(the RF-4B is a photo-reconnaissance version of the Phantom) and prepare
the aircraft for surface transportation. This particular RF-4B will
become a part of the outstanding array of aircraft on display at the
National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, FL.
The members of
NMNA restoration staff that assisted us with the recovery were the same
four who had assisted us during our disassembly of an F-4B at NMNA from
Sept. 29 to Oct. 4, 2002. After helping us disassemble these two
Phantoms, the restoration crew of NMNA will reassemble this RF-4B when it
arrives in Pensacola (two trucks required).
This RF-4B was a
complete aircraft (less two engines) and had been in humidity controlled
storage since its retirement from active service. As a result of
this treatment, the aircraft was a lot easier to break down to its major
components and prepare for transportation.
Be sure and look for
this very unique aircraft during your next visit to the National Museum of
Naval Aviation.
